This week's media news (episode 8)

Welcome to this week's media news.

On March 27, TM Unifi's IPTV service Hypp TV changed its channel numbering. The channel numbering is similar to Astro's. The change in channel numbering affects most of its channels where they are mostly in the 100s; only the free-to-air TV stations and radio channels (Media Prima and Star Publication) are not affected. The new channel numbering as follows:
1xx: Free-to-air and Malay channels
20x and 22x:: Chinese channels
30x: Indian and Bollywood channels
4xx: News channels
50x: Documentary channels
55x-56x: Kids channels
60x: Music channels
61x: Entertainment channels
62x: Lifestyle channels
7xx: Sports channels

Speaking about TV3's news sets, I found out that only Berita Terkini, Detik Niaga 10 and Buletin 1:30 are only using the near-the-newsroom set (as mentioned in the previous episode). The other news programmes come from Studio A Sri Pentas.

NTV7 will air the horror drama series Tanah Merah, directed by Khabir Bhatia. The first episode will air first on Tonton Premiere starting today followed by on NTV7 the next week at 8:30 pm. For each episode viewers will pay as low as RM 3 to watch for 48 hours unlimited.

Pakatan Rakyat rejects party manifesto for 13th GE

On March 23, Pakatan Rakyat rejected the opportunity to do the pre-recorded party manifesto for 13th GE saying that it is a mockery of democracy, according to Astro Awani. Leaders from PAS, DAP and PKR said the duration given was too short and wanted to go on-air not just during election period, but also given throughout the year.

Some leaders such as the BN-Kota Belud member of parliament welcomed the decision to present manifestos, describing it as a step towards democratising information. He also said the 10-minute length of the manifesto is to strengthen what have been said before as the general public knows the content of the BN and PR's manifestos. The president of Parti Rakyat Malaysia said the proposal is a good idea and it shows an open mindset because it provides an opportunity to parties to explain briefly their manifestos, but wanted the airtime to be slightly longer.

Meanwhile on March 27, some political analysts said the Pakatan Rakyat's rejection of the 10-minute airtime offer to present its manifesto is a missed opportunity.

Political analyst wants fair airtime for party manifestos all year long

Political analyst Dr Chandra Muzaffar when contacted by Astro Awani said that he applauded the move by government to allow political parties to air 10 minutes of their manifestos on RTM during the 13th General Election. He also wanted fair airtime not just during the election but throughout the year as well. He comments RTM's TV stations TV1 and TV2 are public broadcasters that are not just for the government but for the people. He calls for the government to have more public broadcasting.

I'm almost eager to wait for the return of Perman on TV9

It's been 11 weeks since Perman suddenly stopped broadcasting midway through its run on TV9. The usual 7:00 pm Friday time slot for Perman was interrupted by re-runs of Bola Kampung. It is now that I realised that TV9 regularly broadcast Bola Kampung and its spinoff Bola Kampung X in preparation for the release of Bola Kampung The Movie. Bola Kampung is a local animation series that I don't bother to watch. I prefer watching Perman instead. Really want to watch because I miss almost all episodes.

Throughout the period Perman was on hiatus, I had been calm all the time because I don't have to catch every single episode of Perman in the timeslot previously. But I still look at my Perman fans' recent tweets on Twitter. I also had watched the 1983 "Perman Birdman ga yattekita" movie that I saw for the first time through Dailymotion during the recent Chinese New Year holiday.

During this period I regularly checked the Tonton TV schedule and eagerly waited for the return of the airing of Perman. The Friday 7:00 pm slot is still occupied by Bola Kampung (still waiting for the coming weeks for any changes after the end of Bola Kampung episode run) while the Tuesday 7:00 pm slot previously used by Bola Kampung X will be replaced by Felix The Cat (Felix The Cat had been aired on Astro Ceria a few years ago which is the early 1990s compilation version. The same version has been aired on TV9 as I had confirmed on the first day of the programme aired on April 2, not the 1930s-1950s shorts which had been previously aired on TV3 in the early 2000s just like how TV3 aired Harveytoons as I thought when I originally write this). The Saturday 6:00 pm timeslot used for Planet of the Reban (local animated series which is currently on rerun basis and will end on April 27! Yay!) and Monday 7:00 pm timeslot used for My Giant Friend (I think the episode run will end) may be suitable timeslots for Perman when it returns.

I'm eager to wait for the return. If any programme changes in the timeslots I mentioned and planned do not include Perman in either timeslots, I will stop liking Perman and maybe wait for many years for a return. Meanwhile, for this school holidays, I'm planning to watch the 2004 "Perman Pa-pa-pa the movie Tako de pon Ashi wa pon" movie that I have downloaded from the internet.

UPDATE: Just a while after posting this, I checked TV9's schedule on Sunday April 7 (I refreshed the Tonton TV schedule to check whether there are schedule changes for Sunday programmes starting next month) and it seems that the Bananana Movie Magic which occupied the 5:30-7:30 pm slot will only air for this month only (I think this is experimental; there might be more of this in the future). If both Sandra the Fairytale Detective at 5:30 pm and Canimals at 6:00 pm ended its episode run, then these slots may be useful for the return of the airing of Perman. And TV9 also decreased the last 30 minutes for other programming aimed at adults which means Bananana block on Sunday ends at 7:00 pm.

UFM banner ad along flyover to Jalan Duta

While on the way to Setia Alam near Shah Alam, I saw a banner advertisement for UFM radio station located on the light lamps of the Sentul flyover to Jalan Duta. I had made a post about the station.

Political party manifestos will air on RTM for the coming 13th GE

Bernama via Astro Awani says that political parties will get 10 minutes on RTM for manifestos. This will occur after the Parliament is dissolved for the coming 13th General Election. Rais Yatim, the Minister of Information, Communication and Culture said the opportunity will be given to both the Barisan Nasional and the opposition, but the presentation will be pre-recorded. The opportunity is given to respect the democratic system in Malaysia. It is the parties' decision whether to use the facility. The presentation of the manifestos must be done according to the terms and conditions set by RTM and would be supervised by the ministry's secretary-general and a panel headed by the Director-General for Broadcasting.

Some notes about the political party manifestos on the media
Rais Yatim introduced the political party manifestos broadcast in a speech during the official opening of Wisma Berita RTM in Angkasapuri in June last year. The political party manifestos will be broadcast on the mass media such as radio and television in a fixed allocated period before the day of general election. Previously, only advertisements for the Barisan Nasional party were broadcast. Countries that have been using political party manifestos are the United Kingdom and Singapore (both General Election and Presidential Election).

This week's media news (episode 7)

Welcome to another episode of "This week's media news".

A few days ago I've seen some news about a cyber attack that has distrupted some TV networks such as KBS, MBC and YTN and bank companies in South Korea. It is the neighbouring North Korea which had made the attack.

Moving on to Malaysian TV. This week TV3's Berita Terkini has moved its set from the usual virtual studio at Studio A Sri Pentas to another one which is the existing near-the-newsroom studio which was used by Buletin Utama in June-September 2012. I really don't know why. Here is the picture of the studio set I took today.
And a bit about TV9's new look. Last Wednesday, I saw 9X breakbumper at the end of a commercial break during the last episode of "Bulan, Bintang dan Kita" but no such "kini kembali" written info appearing unlike during Mutiara Hati.

This week's media news (episode 6)

Welcome to this week's media news. This week I will focus on interesting things happening on Malaysian TV.

The first mid-term school holidays this year will be on the last week of March instead of the second week of March. During the school holidays, TV stations usually air special programmes aimed for schoolchildren at home. So does Bananana on TV3 which offers football-themed programmes under the name "Lagi Lagi Bola" which will be airing this month. The latter three will be aired during this school holidays.

Also interesting to note that Soccer Kids Road to London will be the first Soccer Kids programme to be aired on another channel other than TV3 and the Bola Kampung series also aired for a short time on another free-to-air channel other than TV9 (not counting RTM's TV1 and TV2 which airs Bola Kampung in the late 2000s and pay-TV channels that air Bola Kampung which are Cartoon Network Asia and previously Disney Channel Asia).

Programmes that are part of the themed programmes month are as follows:
  • Soccer Kids Road to London - Sunday 7:30 pm (starting 3.3.2013), also airing on TV9 for 3 weeks at the same airtime as TV3 (not as expected because first 2 weeks of March was occupied by repeat of Fuzz Food, now confirmed will start airing same time as TV3 starting 16.3.2013)
  • Bola Kampung X - 25 to 28.3.2013 10:02 am
  • Bola Kampung - 25 and 26.3.2013 10:32 am
  • Boboiboy (episodes about Boboiboy and his friends playing football only, which appeared in Season 2 in 2012) - 27 and 28.3.2013) 10:32 am
We now move on to a special programme called "Conversation With the PM" which was aired live on TV3 on Tuesday 12.3.2013 at 9:00 pm. It is broadcast in English. It is also broadcast on RTM's TV1 with a few minutes delayed and also on TV Alhijrah two days later with Malay subtitles (confirmed while it was airing at 10:00 pm that day). The programme was aired in front of a live studio audience (as I could see there are many audience seats, so I most probably believe that it was broadcast from NTV7 Glenmarie in Shah Alam). The special programme was held by New Straits Times because Media Prima's TV stations ran a New Straits Times commercial calling for the public to give questions to Najib Razak, the Prime Minister about the upcoming general election on an email address until a few days before the special programme was aired.

When the special programme was aired on TV3, the on-screen logo (same logo design as seen in idents and promos which was mentioned in the previous episode) was slightly enlarged.

Moving on to something related on Lahad Datu which is Operasi Daulat operation (formerly known as Op Daulat). Over the past few weeks, TV1, TV3 and NTV7 has regularly interrupted programming for an Operasi Daulat news conference. The news conference is to update the public about the alarming standoff situation in the east coast of Sabah. The police will make announcements about the matter. The news conferences that I've seen airing this week are 13.3.2013 before 5.30 pm and 16.3.2013 before 11.30 am.

Just a small quote on FOX Sports on Astro (not about the programmes airing on the FOX Sports channels and Star Sports which is just a small matter). FOX Sports now air some promos from Star World, Fox Movies Premium and Fox channel unlike when it was called ESPNStarsports.

About Bola Kampung which airs on TV9, Bola Kampung the Movie which will be released in cinemas on March 21 will be 3D animated instead of digital cel animation. A promo that I've seen last Sunday shows that a full theme song (with new lyrics that supplement the original lyrics in the Bola Kampung's theme song in the TV broadcast where in Bola Kampung is sung by children in a fun mood and in Bola Kampung X which is in rock mood and sung by a boy) will be sung by Idola Kecil artistes. I confirmed it by seeing the Idola Kecil artistes singing the theme song in a recording studio in the promo.

Speaking about TV9's new look, the old look "now, next" information which appears before the end of each commercial break (which I mentioned in the previous episodes) is now confirmed to be different according to programme block and time of day. For the programme blocks (which I confirmed), I've only seen the Mutiara Hati design only, no "now, next" info in Chamsarang. I'm not sure about the other programme blocks. Not all programmes will carry the "now, next" info. The time when the "now, next" design appears are as follows.

  • 2:30 pm to 7:30 pm: (children's programmes, I'm not sure about Mon-Thu 8:30 am where Upin dan Ipin is aired: 2011 design (TV9 logo, "sekarang, selepas ini" ["now, next" info], TV9's website address)
  • other times: current generic design (long grasses, "now, next" info on the TV9 logo, blue sky, rollercoaster track)
TV1 has recently updated its now next information which appears at the start of programmes and after each commercial break at the top-left as part of its new look. The below picture was taken today.

Spectrum band for Malaysia's future digital terrestrial TV broadcasting

While looking back on my previous blogpost about Malaysia's future digital terrestrial television, I found a news report in The Star on 13.1.2012 where the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission says that the spectrum band for the digital terrestrial television broadcasting are 174-230 MHz and 470-742 MHz. I think this is much like Australia which also uses VHF band for digital broadcasting.

Hazimworks celebrates its 1st year!

Hello everyone! This is Khairul Hazim bin Zainudin, the asperger (autistic spectrum) teenager who writes for Hazimworks blog and tweets on Twitter. This month Hazimworks celebrates its first anniversary of blogging and tweeting. Since I opened my blog, I write a lot about anything that interest me - television (mostly about TV presentation), anime (especially about Perman), and sometimes about communication and Malaysian life. The total pageviews in my blog as at the time this blogpost was written is at 9,319.

My current plan for this blog is to change the current template which is Watermark template and the font design. I'm still deciding on when to change my blog's template and font. I'm also considering a design change for my Twitter too, especially my icon picture.

Anyway I would like to thank all my readers in my blog especially my parents for making this blog possible and continuing my effort to write in this blog. I'm looking forward to a better year in my blog for improvements, but now I have to concentrate more on my SPM examinations which will be held in November.

See you soon!

Perman video game spotted in an episode of Majalah 3 1991

While surfing through Majalah 3's episodes from 1991 airing on Emas, a Malay classic TV programmes channel with content from Media Prima on Hypp TV channel 104, I spotted a copy of Perman video game. This one appeared in a report about patrons below 18 coming to video game arcades which is considered illegal.

This week's media news (episode 5)

Welcome to this week's media news. I'm still concentrating on local TV stations, especially about TV presentation.

On March 2, I spotted TV3 using a variation of its usual on-screen logo used during programmes since July 2000 which is actually the real logo which is used for promos and idents. This logo appears to be slightly bigger than the usual one. I think this would be a logo variation in case the normal on-screen logo failed to appear or any filler programme. This logo has appeared twice, in "Wallace and Gromit World of Inventions" (which airs after any 90-minute movie which starts at 11:30 am on the Bananana Movie Magic block as a filler programme which does not appear in the TV guide) and in a news flash about the Operasi Daulat in Lahad Datu which occurred recently.

TV9 has made new additions to its new look (I mentioned the new look as logo revision because I was referring about TV9's logo design in the previous episodes). The "now, next" information which appear before the end of each commercial break has changed, however the 2011 "now, next" information design still appear in the afternoon during the Nick di 9 block. The "Malam ini" lineup (To announce TV9's evening schedule) is also changed. Both are based on the rollercoaster ident, with the information located in the TV9 logo. The break bumpers, which are also based on the rollercoaster ident, is used for programmes not under TV9's regular programme blocks.

Speaking about TV3's Buletin Utama, I want to share some pictures about the Buletin Utama set, located at Studio A Sri Pentas in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. It is used since October last year. It's inspired from ZDF Heute, a news programme from the German public broadcaster ZDF. The set uses virtual-reality technology. The picture below is during the end of Buletin Utama on 30.12.2012.
From what you can see in the picture, the whole set is inspired from ZDF Heute, especially the blue background, the thin white lines and the white-grey world map. The background here is only for Buletin Utama, the other news programmes have different background depending on the time of the day. Also the presenter only sit in the desk for Buletin Utama and Nightline, the other bulletins such as Buletin Pagi, Buletin 1:30 and Berita Terkini have the presenter standing up and surrounded by different background. Other things inspired from ZDF Heute are the astons and lower thirds. Only the name of the news programme is a bit unique.

The wooden desk is slightly different than ZDF Heute's. The desk is now changed to a computer-generated one with the TV3 logo at the centre since February 18. The shape of the computer-generated desk is similar to the previous one.

The picture below is during the end of Buletin 1:30 which was slightly interrupted by a Lahad Datu standoff breaking news on March 5. The main presenter is standing on the left while the breaking news presenters are sitting on the desk. The second picture below is the Buletin Utama news set with the background changed to Nightline's.

The videos below shows the comparison between ZDF Heute (2009) and TV3 Buletin Utama (October 2012).

This week's media news (episode 4)

Welcome to "This week's media news". As the month of February had drawn to a close, I'm still concentrating on local TV stations.

On February 28, Bernama TV celebrated its 5th year of broadcasting. Bernama TV is operated by the local government-owned news agency BERNAMA. Bernama TV started off as the audio-visual division of Bernama on 1 September 1998. Bernama TV was inspired by various news agencies, including ITN of London and NDTV of India. It originally started by having two rented cameras, some cameramen, an editor and four journalists to send audiovisual news material to RTM.

Its first major prominence was when Bernama TV had the opportunity to be the partner for the 1998 APEC summit held in Kuala Lumpur with the first recorded interview with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad. The 30-minute interview was later distributed to TV stations.

Bernama TV's first customer was Telekom Malaysia. Telekom Malaysia wants to offer news through the internet via its website with Bernama's then-established new audiovisual division without having its in-house news service as a lot of money is needed to make one. With the help of Bernama TV, they created Insight Malaysia which is a news programme. Jeffrey Ong, previously worked as a journalist with TV3 in the mid-1990s and also a sportsman, was one of the presenters in the programme.

Other customers of Bernama TV are Channel 9 (now owned by Media Prima and known as TV9 since 2006) with Liputan 9 news programme and Astro for general news. Bernama TV eventually started its own channel on 28 February 2008.
[Bernama TV's history details was taken from Jurnal Bernama Khas which was aired on 28.2.2013 at 9:30 pm and compiled by myself]

Moving on to TV Alhijrah. Today TV Alhijrah started broadcasting to Malacca and district of Jasin on 743.25 Mhz (UHF channel 55).

We're going on to the last part which is TV presentation.

RTM
This week TV2 has changed its ident and break bumper to the current logo design that I had said in the previous episode. The music featured in the ident and break bumper has become fully instrumental and different than the previous one which is sung. The break bumper has no such "kembali selepas ini" and "teruskan menonton" reminder stuff unlike in the previous look.

Media Prima
On February 23, TV3 stopped using programme name identification that appear with the LPF rating logo at the start and after each commercial break of the programme. Now TV3 uses the LPF rating logo instead.

Buletin Utama has changed its desk from being wooden made to a virtual one with the TV3 logo in the middle on February 18.

TV9 which has recently made its logo revision (as mentioned in the previous episode), made a rollercoaster ident which airs at the start and end of transmission. It features TV9's many programme blocks logos.

(Revised on March 8 and 9)
