Media news (episode 23)

Welcome to this week's media news. Not many interesting news this week.

RTM
On July 24, I saw TV1 airing a variation of its doa berbuka puasa which is animated and features a boy and a girl.

Media Prima
Media Prima launches Saya Sayang Malaysia campaign with Boh Plantations for the 56th Merdeka celebration and the 50th anniversary of the formation of Malaysia and also the continuation of #MySyg (more here:http://www.mediaprima.com.my/pressrelease/press-release.aspx?id=186)

On July 23, I saw Jejak Rasul on TV3 at 6:00 pm being broadcast in 14:9 aspect ratio. The next day it airs in the usual 16:9 letterbox.

On July 24, I saw Buletin Utama revised its name graphics.

TV Alhijrah
1 Malaysia TV no longer provide streaming of TV Alhijrah when I last checked the "LIVE @ TVALHIJRAH" page of TV Alhijrah's website where the embeeded streaming media has changed to a message from 1 Malaysia TV stating "This channel is not available in your country". When I checked 1 Malaysia IPTV's website, I found out that TV Alhijrah's live streaming is gone.

UPDATE 2/8/2013: The live streaming returned when I last checked on August 1 after I had breaking fast.

Hypp TV
This week Hypp TV made two advertisements; I saw both of them on Emas on Hypp TV ch 112. One is about KidsCo on ch 560 now has a programme block called SyFy Kids from SyFy. Written in the text of KidsCo's advertisement is the offering of an audio option in English and Mandarin beside Malay (actually English is the main broadcast language of this channel) starting July 22. Another is about Hypp TV Everywhere which offers live streaming of its Hypp TV channel offerings through App Store and Google Play apps and through a desktop version accessible through its website. This is only available for Unifi and Streamyx broadband 4 and 8 Mbps customers. A free trial is available for its customers until September 30.

Lesser-known Malaysian broadcasting stations that I know who owns them (July 2013)

Here are the lesser-known Malaysian broadcasting stations that I know who owns them, through self-observation on TV and my findings in the internet.

  • EC Inspirasi (Hypp TV ch 111) - claims as Malaysia's first dedicated youth TV channel; owned by Homegrown Productions Sdn Bhd where most of the programmes in the channel are produced by itself, operating since June 2012 (source: https://www.facebook.com/ecinspirasi/info)
  • Emas (Hypp TV ch 112) - Media Prima archive content channel owned by Media Prima Content Services which has been operating since June 2011, also Emas Plus and Emas Style on ABNXcess digital cable TV (source: http://www.mediaprima.com.my/pressrelease/press-release.aspx?id=184)
  • Hikmah (Hypp TV ch 113) - Islamic content channel with some programmes sourced from JAKIM, also airing through its website, operating since 2010 (source: http://hikmah.tv/v2/)
  • mobTV.my (internet TV station) - also known as The Malaysian Observer.TV, a Malaysian news portal operating since April 2011 and owned by Contract Advertising Sdn Bhd with its offices at 28-2, Jalan 25/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur
  • MyTTV (internet TV station) - also known as My Tourism TV, a Malaysian news portal concentrating on Malaysian tourism, operating since December 2012 and owned by the same company which owns mobTV.my (see MyTTV's microphone head that I captured)
  • UFM (Klang Valley 101.3 Mhz) - youth radio station broadcasting in the Klang Valley only, seen its advertising banner at mobTV.my and also has its Facebook page

Media news (episode 22)

Welcome to this week's media news. Almost all of the news that I reported this week are TV branding related.

RTM
On July 18, I found out that the TV1 Mewarnaimu ident used since February 2013 now has some female singing vocals.

Media Prima
Media Prima Digital has launched a Ramadan and Aidilfitri content website. The website is called http://www.ramadanraya.com.my/. The website offers recipies from Ramadan-related cooking shows on Media Prima's TV channels such as Ini Caranya, Mencari Resepi Turun-Temurun and Menu Kalimah, highlights of festive related TV programmes and some web-exclusive shows from Tonton such as Raya Fesyen Kritik at the Fesyen section and 1001 Persoalan.

This week I saw two slight variations of Primeworks Studios endcap. One that I saw in Eve's Diary on 8TV is Primeworks endcap animation followed by 8TV Chinese logo and copyright statement under a white background. Another one that I saw in a repeat of Mencari Resepi Turun-Temurun on TV9 is a slightly extended theme tune of Primeworks Studios endcap.

Also since this week NTV7 celebrates its 15th anniversary with the title "15 Years of Feel Good Moments" with a birthday cake and many candies which is seen in its promo (see video below) and promo designs. The music is a remake of NTV7's ident's music which is used since March 2012.

From TV9's Youtube channnel, TV9 has revealed its upcoming branding for Aidilfitri which is called "5 malam 4 hari". The song for this branding is performed by Alif Satar, a local singer. This branding is not yet airing on TV9 at the time this was written.

On July 15, I listened to KL FM's Azan Isyak and heard that the bilal was the same one as the bilal heard on TV3 and TV9's azan broadcasts since 2012.

On July 16, I spotted a presentation error on TV3 where the programme name identifier appeared during a commercial break at 4:18 pm.

On July 20, I saw the programme name identifier on TV9 reappearing a few seconds after the end of Azan Zohor during Jom Berbuka. This is a rare occurence because TV9's programme name identifier does not come out after azan broadcast.

Astro
On July 18, I saw an "18+" rating (18+ written in white in a small red dot) located at the bottom-left on ART Variety on ch 111. The rating that I saw was for a drama called Asia which was aired at 6:00 pm on the channel.

Hypp TV
On July 18 during Sahur time, I saw Hikmah ch 113 (the Islamic TV channel that carries programmes from JAKIM) being added to the live TV mosaic on ch 100. Hikmah does not appear at all in picture-in-picture mode since I started watching Hypp TV service in 2011.

History of Malaysian TV advertising permit number (up until July 2013)

This is the history of Malaysian TV advertising permit number, compiled by myself. I have done some edits about this matter in the Wikipedia article called "Television advertisement" under the Malaysia section some years ago.

The Malaysian TV advertising permit number appears during the first few seconds of any advertisement.  The abbreviation at the first part of the permit number which refers to the ministry which handles the TV advertising permit number always change sometime after the Malaysian government made a new portfolio of ministers and name changes to some ministries after the general election.

1995: KP/YYYY/NNNN (until 1999: KP/YY/NNNN)
2008: KPKK/NNNN/YYYY
2013: KKMM/NNNN/YYYY

Legend:
KP - Kementerian Penerangan
KPKK - Kementerian Penerangan, Komunikasi dan Kebudayaan
KKMM - Kementerian Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia
YYYY - year
NNNN - permit number

Another permit number which appears not just on TV but also on other media (such as newspapers and magazines) is KKLIU (Kementerian Kesihatan Lembaga Iklan Ubat). It is used for advertisements related to health and medicine.

Checking on some programmes that are recorded in studio on Tonton (July 2013)

This morning I checked some programmes that are mostly recorded in studio on Tonton. All programmes mentioned are produced by Primeworks Studios and aired on TV3.

  • Muzik-Muzik 28 - presenters with guests shots are pre-recorded from a studio set at either NTV7 Glenmarie or Sri Pentas? (maybe NTV7 Glenmarie; not mentioned on the programme credits)
  • Sembang Sahur - pre-recorded from MHI studio set at Studio B, Sri Pentas, with the middle part of MHI studio set is converted to a kitchen (NB: Sembang Sahur is the new name for Singgah Sahur which has been airing since 2005)
  • Tadarus Al-Quran - recorded from Kompleks Taman Kesenian Islam Selangor (mentioned in credits via "penghargaan" part)

List of seasons in Komposer TV3 (1997-1998)

This is a list of seasons in Komposer, a show which searches new songwriters to write new songs for singers at Ambang Klasik Sdn Bhd. It was aired on TV3 between 1997 and 1998. I made this by myself by surfing through Melodi episodes on Emas Hypp TV ch 104.

Jerry Retnam was one of the contestants in Komposer in 1997 who would later worked with Media Prima as a sound engineer.

1997: Season 1
1997-98: Season 2
1998: Season 3

Komposer's Season 1's final was aired in its own while Komposer's Season 2 and 3's finals were jointly aired with Sinaran Pasport Kegemilangan respectively.

The revival of Rumah Kedai on TV3

Rumah Kedai, a Ramadan drama series which was aired on TV3, returns after a very long hiatus. Rumah Kedai was aired for many years during the fasting month of Ramadan since 1988. The original Rumah Kedai airs daily while the revived one which is currently airing, airs Monday to Wednesday, starting July 8. The revived series would have 13 episodes when I count the number of episode airings, but it was actually 16 episodes because the drama wanted to end at the last day of Ramadan. So the last episode was actually at episode 16.

The drama still maintains its original content despite having new actors in the revived version. Original idea and scripting is by Mufid Suhaimi and produced by Primeworks Studios. Another long-running programme which airs during Ramadan on TV3 is Jejak Rasul, a documentary series which has been aired since 1995.

I'm not interested in watching Rumah Kedai because I'm not a regular viewer of it. (I'm also not a regular viewer of Jejak Rasul, despite that I also enjoyed learning about history of Islam through subjects such as Sejarah and Pendidikan Islam.) Also, since Rumah Kedai has been on hiatus for a long time, and also I think there has never been a re-run of Rumah Kedai on TV so far, not many of the current generation know about the drama. Only those who had watch Rumah Kedai when it was aired remembers it. Jejak Rasul is more familiar.

Report on Malaysian TV presentation during Ramadan 1434H/2013M

This is my report on Ramadan 1434H/2013M Malaysian TV presentation, compiled by myself, with most of the screenshots about this are from my Flickr photostream.

The purpose of this blogpost is to record any recent reports about Ramadan-related TV presentation spotted by me. For the Waktu Berbuka Puasa and Imsak broadcast times click here, and the list of TV stations airing the Solat Tarawih from Mecca click here.

TV1
TV1 brands its Ramadan-related programmes as Menzahirkan Kesyukuran for general audiences; another one is called Auladdi for younger children which airs from 6:00 to 6:30 pm with programmes such as Aqal & Walid and Adik-Adikku Mengaji and Ceria Ramadan with Ramadan Mat Jo.
TV2 brands it as Ramadan instead, while TVi brands it as Kasih Ramadan, identified from TVi's changed top-right logo for this occasion. RTM also produced some live-action idents and break bumpers (break bumpers have no such "kembali selepas ini, kini kembali" identifier in it, as with some previous occasions such as the recent general election on TV1 and the generic branding on TV2) on the Ramadan occasion. The break bumpers seen on TV1 and TV2 replace the generic ones.

While the generic idents on TV1 was used as usual, I spotted three new idents which may only be seen during this occasion; the former one is a variation of TV1 Mewarnaimu which has a purple orchid flower shot with a forest in the background, the latter two which I think only appear during this Ramadan are "TV1 Seronoknya!" which appears at the 6:00 pm hour, judging that it's for children's programmes and "TV1 Syukurilah Nikmat-Nya" (see picture below) which appears before a long block of commercial break preceeding the Azan Maghrib.
TV1 Syukurilah Nikmat-Nya ident (Ramadan 1434H/2013M)

TV1 has redesigned its clock banner for this Ramadan to allow airing today's date in the Hijrah year in blue which appears after today's date in Gregorian year and before the current time in 24-hour form. The brown shade was seen until July 14 where it was replaced by white.

RTM TV1 Ramadan 1434H time banner 12-7-2013

An addition of a blue crescent on TV1's top-right logo was broadcast once on July 14.

Both TV1 and TV2's Waktu Berbuka Puasa dan Imsak broadcast is sponsored by Saji, Felda's cooking oil brand.

Media Prima
TV3 and TV9 and other Media Prima companies shares the same brand for Ramadan this year, which is called Seindah Ramadan. Ramadan branding in the previous years was done separately. During this period, TV3 and TV9 will not use regular branding. TV3 uses blue as the background colour and the presentation materials used are promo design, menus (for "Petang ini/Malam ini" and "sekarang, selepas ini, seterusnya"), break bumpers, "selepas ini" menu and also some recorded continuity links to next Ramadan-related programme provided by Adi Putra and Nora Danish (both are local actors; evidence is from this Youtube video). This is TV3's rare occasion of having continuity links; such type of this were used by RTM on TVi and in 2012 in Podium, airing on TV1 and TV2.
TV9 uses green as the background colour and the presentation materials used are promo design, menus (for "sekarang, selepas ini" and "Malam ini") and break bumpers. Fonts and font style for the presentation materials used by TV3 and TV9 are different.
On July 16, I spotted NTV7 using puple for its only Ramadan presentation which is Waktu Berbuka Puasa dan Imsak. On July 19, I spotted Bananana using yellow for its promo for Saladin, a local animated series.

The Waktu Berbuka Puasa dan Imsak seen on both channels are sponsored by Baba's since 2 Ramadan and the countdown to next prayer time (except Isyak) is sponsored by Proton along with a hadith quote. In last year's last two weeks before the end of Ramadan, U Mobile (under the U Eratkan Lagi brand) sponsors a time check before the next prayer time which shows the exact time 10 seconds before prayer time.

As with the previous years on TV3 and TV9, the usual two Tazkirah Ramadan are aired. The first one airs at 7:58 pm with Dato Siti Nor Bahayah Mahmood which is sponsored by Safi Balqis Perfect 10 and the second one is during the news with Ustaz Mohd Hafiz Hj Fauzi of the Syariah Department of Bank Muamalat sponsored by Bank Muamalat (see picture below).

tazkirah ramadan bank muamalat 13-7-2013
TV Alhijrah
TV Alhijrah uses a new Ramadan branding this year, replacing the original one used in the past two years. It is called Ramadan Satu Perjuangan. The theme music for its promo uses Johore ghazal music. For the Waktu Berbuka Puasa and Imsak broadcast, it is accompanied by recordings of performances from the recent Cinta Rasul concerts organised by TV Alhijrah which is placed at the top-left of the screen.

Astro
Astro Oasis places today's date in Hijrah year below Astro Oasis' top-right logo for this Ramadan.

(Updated July 19 and 21; FINAL UPDATE on August 7)

Media news (episode 21)

Welcome to this week's media news. We've come to the month of Ramadan.

RTM
RTM will be going on tour to various places across Malaysia with the Jelajah Ramadan RTM 2013 which will be going on throughout the month of Ramadan 1434H.

RTM has set up a live streaming on RTM's website which will air programmes from the Malaysian Parliament when proceeding and also highlights, called "RTM Parlimen". It is broadcasting since late June.

On July 10 during Syahadah airing at 6:30 pm on TV1, I saw TV1 re-used its previous programme identifier used in 2012 which has the LPF rating box.

Media Prima
Emas, Emas Plus and Emas Style channels which are part of Media Prima Content Services are now available on ABNXcess digital cable TV, according to a press release by Media Prima. The latter two channels which are available only on ABNXcess while the former one is on TM's Hypp TV and ABNXcess. Emas Plus is a Malaywood channel which offers Malay drama and telemovies such as Spa Q, Bella and Ezora, and targets younger adults, yuppies and viewers from high-income households. Emas Style on the other hand is a lifestyle channel which airs earlier seasons of Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan and Ole-Ole Chef Wan. Emas Style targets the traditional urban modern Malay segment.

Media Prima announced a "No Free Gifts Policy" as part of the overall Media Prima's integrity initiative, also from another press release from Media Prima. Under the policy, Media Prima employees are not allowed to receive any forms of gratuity from external parties. Instead, Media Prima allows the practice of making charitable contributions under the extenal parties name to Media Prima's charity funds. This is to promote corporate responsibility. Datuk Johan Jaaffar, Chairman of Media Prima says that this will complement Media Prima's existing code of ethics.

Haliza Hashim has been a representative of TV3 in London, occasionally seen making news about Malaysian-related events around the United Kingdom and Europe, along with Didi Buidarto from Jakarta. Haliza Hashim has been with TV3 since the 1990s, evidenced from an episode of Sekapur Sirih in February 1994 that I saw on Emas Hypp TV.

On July 12, I found out that TV9's Raudhah programme block has two idents, each of them have different music but use the same animation visuals.

What I found out recently while seeing TV3's news programmes is TV3 news department has changed its jacket for news reporters. The new one has Media Prima logo at the front. The previous one has the name Malaysia and Media Prima's TV stations at the back. I also found out that TV3 has also changed its microphone head to a new one which has the current rendering of TV3's logo and the Malaysia name below the logo and a small blue strap at the top and bottom. The previous one has been used for a long time since 1990.

On July 14 during the start of Subuh prayers I saw TV9 using TV3's Azan Subuh video which is used by TV3 since last June. In last year's Ramadan TV9 uses its own version of Azan Subuh, but this broadcast was stopped when TV9 resumed back its broadcast start time at 6:30 am after Ramadan.

ABN
After looking at Media Prima's press release of the launch of Emas' new channels on ABNXcess, I surfed ABN's website. I found out that ABNXcess launches more channels than any other pay-TV provider. A unique part of ABNXcess that I found is they offer channels in Filipino, Malayalam, Bangladeshi, Telugu and  Nepalese through the Add-on package, therefore making ABNXcess really suited to the growing number of expatriates speaking these languages.

I have made a report Malaysian TV presentation during Ramadan 1434H/2013M which will be updated throughout this Ramadan. Click here.

Media news extra - some supplements and self thoughts (late June 2013)

(Made two weeks ago)

Here are some supplements to my recent media news episode and thoughts made by myself.

TV3 promotes the Petronas Malaysian Cub Prix Championship event. The championship is now in its 20th season. It is held by motorsports@petronas and highlights of the championship event airs on TV3 after midnight, which makes it somewhat a rather minor programme to me since it airs after midnight where I would be sleeping. It is TV3's habit to air sports programmes after midnight, since it airs very few sports programmes on TV since pay-TV took almost all of the sports programme rights. RTM concentrates on local sports. Besides Petronas Malaysian Cub Prix, TV3 airs The Football Review, Scoreboard and Kaki Bola.

It seems that when the recent haze period comes in, TV stations will go to the top floor of their building and record what happens outside, during the haze and after the haze when there is clean air and bright sky. The TV stations should adapt the convenient way to record what happens outside is through a special CCTV-like camera called the "tenki camera" (天気カメラ; weather camera) in Japan. It is more popular there where it is also used for news programmes and weather forecasts. But I'm not sure about the cost to install and air it. I'm not talking about the more common American-ish weather cameras. In a related matter, TV2 places a camera that faces the Mid Valley City near Angkasapuri, where the camera is located. The camera shot can be seen at the end of TV2's news programmes every day especially News on 2.

The production of Fokus Hari Ini on Hypp TV, which was previously produced by Bernama for a long time, is now produced by The Capital TV as of June 2013. Fokus Hari Ini is a daily Malay news programme which is available on Hypp TV's VOD service.

Media Prima has three studio complexes, one in Sri Pentas, another in Plaza Alam Sentral in Shah Alam, and another one in NTV7 Glenmarie Shah Alam. I'll write more about this if I have time.

TV3 azan broadcast history (up until July 2013)

(I started making this three weeks ago)

This is the history of TV3 airing the azan (Muslim call of prayers).

Although TV3 had substituted the azan broadcast with a hadith quote or a text announcement during live programmes for a long time in the 1990s until December 2012 (with the airing of azan during the Zohor and Asar prayer times), TV3 began airing azan with Azan Subuh and Azan Maghrib in either 2000 or 2001. TV3's azan broadcast is only aired when is already prayer time in Kuala Lumpur, following suit with TV1, TV9, TV Alhijrah, Astro Oasis and radio stations based or near the Kuala Lumpur prayer time. Sometimes TV3 does not air the azan especially during Zohor prayer time especially when the prayer time reaches close to Buletin 1:30 time or live programming such as Melodi. TV3 does not air Azan Isyak and airs a text announcement instead.

The following is TV3's azan broadcast history in detail using chronology, compiled by myself from my experience.

2000 or 2001 - Azan Subuh and Azan Maghrib (with footage from Jejak Rasul; Azan Subuh has prayer time announcement by Ahmad Noor Sulaiman at the start)
2011 - New version of Azan Maghrib with different bilal (with new footage from Jejak Rasul)
December 2012 - Azan Zohor and Asar using one of TV9's azan footage which is pictures of beautiful mosques of the world; local bilal (same as TV9's)

since 5.6.2013 (according to Youtube user Muhammad Aminuddin Zulkifli which is "sejak malam Israk Mikraj") - New version of Azan Subuh, Zohor, Asar and Maghrib with new bilal and new footages from Jejak Rasul

This one is Azan Maghrib

And this one is Azan Asar

Media news (episode 20)

Welcome to this week's media news.

RTM
On the afternoon of June 6, I checked TV1's schedule at the new look The Star Online. TV1 airs two unusual sports programmes besides the usual local football programmes they air and also shared resources with Astro Arena, badminton, and the recent Sukma Games held in Kuala Lumpur. The International Power 7S Rugby 2013 airs on June 6 at 4:05 pm (not sure whether this is one-off) and then the 2013 Summer Universiade (mistyped as "Universide") which will air at 2:30-3:30 am the next day. Universiade is the universities' version of the Olympics. This year's Universiade takes place in Kazan, Russia. This year Malaysia takes part in the Universiade and RTM becomes the official broadcaster for the games; previously there were few coverage on the games and they were covered only in the news. RTM brands its sports programmes offering under the slogan "Sukan Terbaik Hanya di RTM" (the best sports only on RTM).

Media Prima
On June 6, I found out that both TV3 and TV9 share the same branding for Ramadan 1434 H. It is called Seindah Ramadan and I think this was produced jointly by TV3 and TV9's brand management department. The only thing which is different is the background colour. TV3's background colour is blue while TV9's is green.

seindah ramadan tv3 6-7-2013

tv9 ramadan 1434h branding - taken from tanyalah ustaz promo

Astro
While channel surfing in the early morning of July 4, I found out that Discovery Science on Astro ch 554 has changed its original logo to the latest one which is used in the United States since June 2011 (checked from Wikipedia).

Hypp TV
Emas on Hypp TV ch 112 had a new look on July 8. Emas' logo was changed from the original one that was used since its launch on 1.6.2011 to a new one which is just the letter E. The ident, new promo design (no promos were aired a few months before this), break bumpers and a short ident after end of programmes (the latter two have no sound while the former two have new music soundtrack) started at 7:29 am and the new on-screen logo appearance started at 8:59:17 after a commerical break.

ABN
According to The Star Online, the ABNXcess digital cable TV service has launched on June 6 at the Era Baru carnival held at Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil. ABN is headed by Tan Sri K.K. Eswaran, the executive chairman of ABN Media Group. Eswaran is new to the broadcasting and internet service industry. He has experience in property and plantations especially palm oil.

ABN which provides TV and high-speed internet up to 50 Mbps using hybrid fibre coaxial through ABNXcess competes with existing pay-TV companies such as Astro and TM's Hypp TV. It is currently broadcasting from Puchong Gateway which can air 200 channels in its facility. For the launch it will start with 100 channels; in two months time, 20 new channels will be added. The move to ABN Mediapolis at Taman Teknologi Malaysia in 2015 will allow ABNXcess to air 500 channels. In the staff matter, ABN hires 400 people to work in ABN, including media veteran Sreedhar Subramaniam, who is CEO of ABN. By year-end another 200 will be hired.

ABNXcess is available at selected areas around the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru. While Maxis/Astro shares the smae fibre optic cable as TM, ABN will use Tenaga Nasional's electricity poles to run its fibre cables to homes. ABN also has an agreement with Fibrecom and also with TM in the future for its backhaul.

ABN has conducted trials with over 1000 subscribers over a year. Eswaran hopes that ABNXcess will be available to 600 000 homes after a year.

Astro channels broadcast in SD 14:9 (as of June 2013)

These are the channels on Astro that are broadcast in SD 14:9 as far as I know (14:9 is an aspect ratio with the HD/widescreen source upconverted to fit the 4:3 screen. It can be easily identified by seeing a very thin bar on your screen, distinguishing from the 16:9 letterbox format where the top and bottom black bars are more bolder).

Ch 391 - KBS World (simulcast of HD version on ch 392)
Ch 616 - Cartoon Network Asia (in 4:3 when airing local advertising from Astro)
Ch 709 - Lifestyle Asia

TV Alhijrah's normal branding is changed every 1 Muharram in the Islamic year. The branding for the normal one and for Muslim festivals is produced in-house and includes idents, promo design, Al-Quran and hadith quotes, and a static close screen which is seen during its close hours (12:00 to 6:00 am) . TV Alhijrah's children's programmes block is called Zon Aulad and it is separately branded which includes an ident and promo design.

TV Alhijrah also has special branding for Muslim festivals, which temporarily replaces the normal branding.
