Clandestine radio stations in Sarawak as reported by Bernama

Just recently there are some news reports about the existence of two clandestine radio stations in Sarawak, as reported by Bernama. (Clandestine radio stations are radio stations that are broadcast illegally and broadcast from a foreign country. Another name for clandestine radio is pirate radio). They are Radio Free Sarawak and Radio Kenyalang. Both stations are broadcast illegally from foreign countries. The Sarawak Chief Minister said on January 17 that Radio Free Sarawak broadcast mostly in Iban and makes no respect for the truth while Radio Kenyalang is reported to have relations to the opposition Sarawak Workers Party. One of the modus operandi of the stations were distributing free radio sets in the rural areas. People who listen to these stations were angry because the stations make lies about the Sarawak government. Some quarters are calling for the government to take against the stations. Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister on January 25 said that Radio Free Sarawak should be operated locally if they are really run by genuine Sarawakians.

This week's latest media news

This is a compilation of the latest media news that happened around South East Asia, compiled by myself.

On January 21 in Singapore, Channel NewsAsia gets a new look with the slogan "Understand Asia" and begins 24-hour broadcasting. It is now broadcasting from Marina Bay Studio instead of the previous Caldecott Broadcast Centre. Its existing newscasts have been changed to News Now. News Pulse will air during midnight hours. (Source: Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union)

Also on January 21, KBS World's HD feed (Astro ch 392) repositioned its top-right logo located inside the 4:3 aspect ratio to slightly near the 14:9 limit. The SD feed of the channel (seen on Astro ch 391) switched its aspect ratio to 16:9 letterbox instead of being 4:3 cropped but on the next day later changed to 14:9 aspect ratio. This will be Astro's second channel to be broadcast in 14:9 aspect ratio after Cartoon Network Asia (Astro ch 616). KBS World's HD feed has previously aired its "HD" logo located outside the 4:3 screen between September 3 and December 30 last year. KBS World's logo position is most probably in sync with the Korean terrestrial TV channels.

On January 28, ESPN (Astro ch 812) will change its name to FOX Sports. ESPN HD (Astro ch 832) will also change to FOX Sports Plus. The branding will be similar to FOX Football Channel on Hypp TV.

Perman merchandises sold in Odaiba

Danny Choo of Culture Japan fame recently went to Odaiba near Tokyo. One picture that interest me was a picture of some Perman merchandises on the bottom right part of the picture about Doraemon merchandises. The merchandises are at the "natsukashi" section of Odaiba Decks entertainment facility.

Cartoon Network Asia Astro ch 616 switched to 14:9 aspect ratio

Cartoon Network Asia on Astro ch 616 switched its aspect ratio to 14:9 on January 10. Previously it was broadcast in original 4:3 aspect ratio and then for a few days before the switch in 16:9 stretched. Cartoon Network Asia HD has yet to be broadcast in Astro despite being advertised on pay-TV providers that air Cartoon Network Asia across Asia. This is the only channel on Astro to broadcast in full 14:9 aspect ratio.

Chronology of the start of 24 hour broadcasts by Malaysian free-to-air TV stations

This is a chronology of full time 24 hour broadcasting made by Malaysian free-to-air TV stations.

31.8.1997 - TV3 (until November 1998 due to Asian financial crisis, from December 1998 until early 2000s broadcasting started at noon on weekends or 9:00 am on other days until late at night, also experienced by other stations that existed during that time)
2004 - TV3 (Thursday to Sunday, then irregular until 2011)
1.8.2004 - TV1 (Night hours are filled with hourly news updates, this practice continued after 24 hour broadcasting switched to TV2 in 2006)
1.4.2006 - TV2 (after 60-hour broadcasts during RTM's 60th anniversary; TV1 subsequently stopped 24 hour broadcasting afterwards)
January 2011 - TV3 stopped off-air hours and then switched to 24 hour broadcasting
August 2012 - TV1 (without announcement after the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, previously only broadcast 24 hours during the fasting month of Ramadan)

The only stations that do not broadcast 24 hours a day are NTV7, 8TV, TV9 and TV Alhijrah. Only NTV7 does not occasionally broadcast 24 hours a day during the fasting month of Ramadan.

Perman on hiatus for a while, maybe?

Last week, after making this post, I looked at Tonton's TV schedule at Tonton website (Tonton is Media Prima's video portal website) and chceked on TV9's schedule for Friday. TV9 confirmed that Perman will be replaced by Bola Kampung on the Friday 7:00 pm airtime slot. I have sadness for a bit but this does not deter me to like Perman, even when it has to go for a hiatus for a while for other programmes. Or maybe not returning, in my opinion. I still have my friends on Twitter who likes Perman.

Day by day, while I was at school, my thoughts on Perman are slowly decreasing because of school and not being on the internet. But I still draw some Perman characters especially Mitsuo and Sumire. I felt calmness because Perman was not airing on TV9, not like when Friday comes, I would be anxious in waiting for Perman to air at 7:00 pm where I had to eat dinner one hour early.

When I turned to TV9 yesterday at the airtime used to air Perman anime, I saw Bola Kampung Season 4 with the episode Kawan Internet Bahagian 2. I didn't feel worried at all because I read the TV schedule. TV9 airs Bola Kampung again besides airing its spin-off Bola Kampung X which started airing last Tuesday; both are currently in re-run basis. Finding out that most programmes air just 13 episodes unlike animes which airs episodes more than 13 (maybe even more) and Bola Kampung 4 being at episode 7 yesterday evening, I estimate that Perman will return on March 1. I'm not sure what happens next when Perman airs on my estimated date.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations which will be held at South Africa will air in Malaysia on TV3 and TV9, both Media Prima's TV stations. The live matches of the Africa Cup of Nations will also be streamed on Tonton, Media Prima's video portal. The football cup will be held starting January 19.

Paddle Pop Begins 2 Malay dub end credits on TV9

Just uploaded this end credit of Paddle Pop Begins 2 Malay dub credits on TV9, anyway I'm not interested with the programme, just the dubbing team because it is different than any other Malay dubbed programmes (mostly anime)

Hot FM DJ Faizal Ismail is one of the voice actors in the dubbed version

Perman stopped airing on TV9? Or just take a hiatus?

This afternoon when I watch the programme guide on Hypp TV, I saw the Friday 7:00 pm slot on TV9 being replaced by Bola Kampung instead of Perman, an anime that I used to watch very often and is my favourite.

Since I guess Bola Kampung runs shorter than Perman (I'm not talking about the time duration of both programmes) where Bola Kampung has fewer than 13 episodes or maybe fewer seasons than Perman which runs longer and has more than 500 episodes, then I really expect that this will be short term. Or I guess that the existing Perman Malay dubbing team is not ready yet to dub new episodes or maybe TV9 wants to concentrate more on local animation much like how the station air Upin & Ipin. As at time of writing this, I have yet to receive any news from TV9 staff.

Bananana Squad not just on TV9, but also on TV3 and NTV7

This is a follow-up to the previous post.

Bananana Squad is a short children's programme which airs not also on TV9 at the airtime formerly used by Berita Adik last year, but also on TV3 at 9:30 am and NTV7 at 10:00 am, because TV3, NTV7 and TV9 are part of Media Prima TV channels. Each day every week will be different segments. So there will be segments on science or other stuff, everything bite-sized for children.

Bananana Squad debuts on TV9

Bananana Squad which starts today on TV9, is a new short children's programme which replaces Berita Adik which has been aired not for a long time, just two years. I believe this is not a children's news programme and is entirely different because it is more like a magazine programme with different production team and also being produced in 16:9 letterbox. Its first episode was presented by an adult called Deera instead of children. The first episode was the tips segment which will appear every Tuesday. The presenter goes to a football stadium and talks about signs of football injuries. I think in other days Bananana Squad will air different segments or possibly just air every Tuesday only. It airs at 2:28 pm with a repeat at 5:28 pm.

100th post: Happy New Year 2013!

Happy New Year 2013 to all my blog readers! This is my 100th post and the first post for the year 2013!

Last year was so amazing because I've opened my blog and my twitter. I've written my thoughts and spread the news on things that I like for the past 10 months. I've make friends from overseas (mostly Japanese who like Perman) and follow through twitter. Now both my blog and my twitter are almost one year old. I appreciate my experience writing my blog throughout the period. What I'm going to do for my blog and my twitter is some changes like changing my Twitter icon and redesign my blog. I'll make those things later if I have time and some idea because I have to concentrate with my school studies.

This year I'll be taking the SPM examinations. I'm in Form 5 this year. I'll be so busy with school this year because I have to study more, especially Form 4 subjects because most questions from Form 4 will appear in SPM examinations. Of course while I may learn new things that makes me feel curious, I'll have many challenges at school like getting bullied, no friend wants to be friends with me, teacher getting angry which causes stress to me.

I don't know whether there may be some radical changes to my school this year besides what I know that the Science and Maths subjects reverted back from English to Malay in phases (this year is for Form 2 and Form 5, Form 1 and Form 4 completed) and wearing black shoes instead of white shoes at school.

This year, maybe, will be the last year for Kiteretsu and Perman on Media Prima as these animes will reach its last episodes. Kiteretsu is airing on TV3 since 2007 and has its first run in Malaysia while Perman has been aired on TV2 in the past decade. Perman had a second run on TV9 in 2009; Perman first aired in TV2 in early 2000s. I started watching Kiteretsu since the start of its airing on TV3; I watched Perman since late 2011 with episodes from autumn 1984, then in 2012 revert back to mid-summer 1984 episodes rerun. So I have a big lag between the start and the middle part of the episode run of Perman (more than 400 episodes), this includes the Perman specials (may have been aired in Malaysia) and movies (not really aired in Malaysia) that I've yet to watch and Perman manga (not really publish in Malaysia but some references to characters in Perman appear in Doraemon) that I've read some. I've made some estimation with the episode count of both animes that Perman will have new episodes from January 1985 to the end of its run in July 1985 on January 18 while Kiteretsu which has more than 300 episodes, will end sometime in August or September. I'll try my best watching both until the end of their run. When either both ends, I'll miss them very much and make a tribute to both of them.

That's all for my blogpost for today. Next time I'll make more posts.
